Today is November 9th, 1989

"Permission has been granted to visit the West”

A misunderstanding is all it took for the wall to come down and a continent to be reunited.
JFK said it: “Ich bin ein Berliner”.

I have joined the Trifecta Writing Challenge Week 86.  The subject is Time Travel in 33 words.
Today all of the German people are electing their new government.

  4. I remember that -- I didn't really understand the wall. I was too young. But when I grew older and then it finally came down -- joy. I hope the elections turn out as you hope they will, however that is.

  5. Wow, exactly 33 words. Amazing. Why 33 words (as opposed to 32 or 34, or 23)? Btw, I have a little piece of the Wall over there on my bookcase, which I got on my one and only visit to Berlin in 1992.

  6. It's been a hard decision this year. No doubt I was not the only one who had to think long and hard and read quite a few articles in various papers and elsewhere before deciding on where to make their two crosses today. But not voting was compeltely out of the question for me.

  10. The political posters were all over the place when I was there and even though I cannot understand German, they said much of the same thing our politicians say. One of our tour guides was running for office.

  11. That was such a memorable day! My college roommate Ruth, who had lived and worked in Kassel for several years between college graduation and law school, went back for the occasion and stayed with her former landlady to celebrate. I remember well when the Wall went up and how sad it was to see people losing their lives trying to escape over it.

  22. Hi Friko - I hadn't realised that it was all due to a mistake in Communication .. must have been Chinese whispering around ... but thank goodness it happened and the country was reunited. The recent election seems a good thing -

Love your time travel entry ... I was in South Africa and communication over there was pretty sketchy .. so I did hear about the Wall et al, but think I'd rather have been here to hear the commentary ..

Hope the weather is as nice with you as it is here .. happy weekend .. Hilary
