Connections

Map of St. Ninian’s Isle, Shetland, Scotland

For A.H.

The two of us
Tethered
For all eternity.

Ravages of time,
tempests and turmoil
cannot separate us.

Spring-tides and storms
may force the link
to become submerged,

but soon calm prevails
and it is free again
for all to see.

Like the
umbilical cord
connecting us,

no matter how great
the strain
we put upon it.

This poem is in answer to
Tess Kincaid’s Magpie 186.

  1. I have those connections, too, Friko. But I'm unable to articulate them like this. Thank you! BTW, it occurred to me that I have had a few people I thought were my friends who weren't. Your description of that experience stirred something up in me that I've been mulling. Thank you for sharing that, too. (in a previous post)

  3. Expressed well, a strong tie. I like the map, is that a bridge connecting it to the mainland?

  4. People come in and out of our lives, but many stay in our hearts, no matter the distance, no matter the pain.

    I loved your poem.

  5. no matter how great the strain we put on it...i like the acceptance of the fact we, not the storms, are often the ones putting stress on it...

  10. I would say this is just a lovely poem - "the tie that binds" whether its birth, friendship, marriage, relationship - you've - as we say in the Maritimes - "Hit the nail on the head" - for sure, Eh

  18. Hallo Friko,

  19. I love this one, the last line most especially.

I treasure these relationships, and they are few and far between.

    =)

  20. Whether seen or not, (whether wanted or not!) many such connections exist in our lifetime. This is NOT an "attempt" at poetry! It is beautiful poetry.
