Goodbye Summer

The swallows are making ready to fly,
Wheeling out on a windy sky;
Goodbye Summer, Goodbye, Goodbye

Two swallows perched on the edge of the gutter, mother bird chirping, twittering, chiding; fledgling shuffling precariously. Fledgling hurls itself into nothingness; a flurry of wings, they're gone.

  1. Goodbye summer for you and goodbye holidays for me. The mood dipping and soaring, or soaring and dipping. I am back in Madrid in a house that has been closed for 2 months, so you can imagine all the housecleaning and organizing that await me. And then back to work, which I am looking forward to.
    That is a beautiful photo of the swallows. Coming back through the Alentejo we found all the stork nests empty, they are already gone to North Africa.

  2. Hi Friko, The swallows have left our neighbourhood too
    .
    Autumn is clearly here with colder winds and rainy and cloudy.

    Have a good evening and Friday.

    Love,

  6. Our swallows are still here but I can tell by the way they are gathering that they are ready to be gone - could be tomorrow.

  7. Hello Friko. I enjoyed your poetic thoughts on summer's last days.

    Here, in Bermuda, there is no real autumn. September is one of the hottest months. Then it is spring like till January.

  11. Beautifully evocative poem, Friko. I enlarged the photo, and the swallow on the precipice looks scared to death! It just takes one step--a good lesson for us all. I wonder if your swallows migrate to Capistrano? No, that would be too far. the Canary Islands? xx

  13. Swallows are still here in the east, but they're beginning to gather on the wires in larger groups. Hope they stay around a bit longer - there are plenty of insects for them to feast on.
    (And I still haven't been able to get a good photo of one flying!)

  14. Our swallows disappeared when I blinked one day last week. The dragonflies have left as well. So many lovely summer afternoons were spent on a lounge in the garden while watching the swallows and blue dragonflies swoop and whirl after the mosquitoes. Magical afternoons.
