Just when it felt safe to cheer up

and come out from behind that black cloud, they decided to have a divorce.

  1. I'm shocked at the vote results. What will the world be for the younger generation? My heart goes out to Britain and to Europe.

  2. I am rather devastated by the direction that we are traveling in the world. Sigh. I am also shocked. :-(

  3. I am so sorry about this. I thought of you when I heard about it. Really seems like we are all on a leaky ship in the ocean. Goodness, we have enough stupidity going on here. Now I realize that there is plenty there, too. I live in TX, by the way. Thanks for the post. I consider you a friend. Nice to know there are some of us with similar thoughts, feeling the same shock and dismay. Take care. Please keep on talking to us.

  6. I was sure that Britain vote 'in' and now I'm upset, Friko.

  7. What a crazy outcome!
And it will now cost millions to get out. Clearly the group of older voters failed to see that 80,000 or more laws need changing, trade tariffs to EU will restart , flow of transport of goods and people will change to a slow down at borders. It is shocking. And the close vote just created a bigger divide in local areas. Now we just need Trump in US and the world will go into a new ühase of turmoil as we have not had in a while. How did we get so out of control using a democratic system?

  9. Shocked and dismayed, Friko, and concerned over here for we have our own circus performance that could well be president. I think I'll just go outside and keep pulling out weeds.

  10. I'm still trying to figure out how that happened. So sorry and frustrated. Holding breath that the transition and its aftermath isn't as dismal as it seems, but who knows?

  11. Dear Friko, I realize I still owe you an email, but wanted to let you know right here and now, that I would very much appreciate your writing more about the referendum results as they evolve. I value your knowledge, reasoning and wonderful writing. xo

  12. Thisis awfully upsetting. Much as we might like to, we can't turn back the clock!. As Thomas Wolfe said, "You can't go home again."

  13. Well, I guess the US doesn't have the exclusive award for crazy, scary politics. What is happening to the world?!

  14. wtf? from your comments it looks like many of us share a serious concern. dualities will mislead us every time. instead of unity we have us and them. that's the problem as i see it in a nutshell. how easy it is for mass deception. i don't understand how that happens, but i know it does. i hope england and europe somehow come out of this decision whole and i hope the usa at the least announce that there no role for donald trump's racism, even in the midst of fear.

  15. Indeed! After spending the better part of a day in a catatonic state of shock, I finally resorted to watching this.

    2. You are entitled to your opinion. Whatever your conscience tells you is the right thing for you. I don’t share your opinion.

I also feel that we should all be participants in politics. We are not really entitled to comment or complain if we don’t take part, e.g. by voting.

  17. I haven't kept on top of it, nor do I understand this, but I read everywhere no one has a good grasp on it.
The consequences happening sound enough to make possibly a second-thoughts on it.

  18. A referendum is always dangerous for governments as it allows people to vote free of the party system - thus this one. People are fed up with the way in which their society is evolving and vote to show their rulers what they think of them.
Had British education managed to show the young how to reason rather than how to show their emotions in a PC context the arguments advanced by those voting 'Leave' would have been couched in more acceptable language...but it strikes me that the racism came from the leaders of the 'Leave ' campaign rather than from the people on the ground.

  19. No one over here can understand how this happened. Shock and disbelief from everyone we talk with. I feel for the young people who have had a good portion of their future hijacked.

  20. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. I also think that either people were not well informed or they simply did not pay attention, I am not sure which. It now seems that lots of people want to change their minds (I'm shocked, shocked I say!!). Im wondering if this is also breaking up the Empire as both Northern Ireland and Scotland seem determined to remain in the EU.

For what it's worth, I do think that the EU has probably become a regulatory nightmare, my son and I still joke about the idea of them controlling the autobahn speeds, lol. But I think there has to be a better way than leaving. I also think that they have absorbed too many countries, but that's just me the outsider.

FWIW this is what I think would happen in a Trump victory in the US. Everyone waking up on the first Wednesday or Thursday and saying "Oh my God, what have I done???

  21. I'll admit that I don't actually know what this means to the UK or the world, but apparently it could be devastating... and people are shocked. Hopefully, it will all work out. Politics have taken a strange turn lately.

  22. Whenever I watch a group of bright , well educated young people from around Europe chatting , I see how much they learn from each other , how much they enjoy each other's company .
I want this for my grandsons and their friends , too , in years to come .
Brexit was a huge mistake .

  23. Misinformation, some downright lies, lack of education, lack of interest all contributed to this disaster.

  24. No one here in the US expected that to happen. In fact, we weren't even worried about it. Such a surprise.

  25. It's a damn shame. I keep hoping there will be a re-vote.
