Just thought I’d tell you

that I’m definitely still alive and keen to get back to the blogging universe.

Funnily enough, I’m getting stiffer and more sore from the fall as the days go by; my knees still smart, and hips and shoulders complain when I make any sudden moves.

But Millie has long been forgiven.

I am using my brand new iMac, the latest version, which takes a bit of getting used to. I am nearly through setting her up. Like all new acquaintances she takes careful handling. I am also rather cross with Apple for doing away with Microsoft Office and MacWord. It’s a complicated process to reinstall the data contained in the files because Yosemite refuses to ‘read’ them. Luckily there’s Time Machine keeping them safe until I find a way to rescue them.

  1. This is good news. I was just wondering about you today. You were on my mind. I'm glad you are ok. (So am I after heart surgery that I had last week.)

Congrats on your new Mac! I think you will love it. It does take some getting used to. The primroses are just beautiful.

  2. Tired of being beholden to Mr Gates, we stopped paying for Microsoft Office and now use the free Open Office and it is brilliant and opens all format documents and they can either be saved in their original file format of saved as a Open Office file.

  3. Lovely to see you back again. I hope the pain/stiffness wears off. Quickly. And that you come to terms with your new toy.

  4. It is rather inconsiderate isn't it? They want you to be a loyal customer but then they make updating unnecessarily difficult. Glad you are improving albeit slowly. I also have an iMac and used the same solution as Andrew. I use the free Open Office.

  5. So nice to see you back, and to hear the good news about the computer. There's always a learning curve, but I know you'll do fine. As for the latent stiffness and soreness: that's always been my experience. The last time I took a real tumble (actually, I fell off a dock into the water - silly me!) it took about three days for the effects to make themselves well and truly known. Ah, life!

  6. I am also glad to hear you're on the mend, albeit slowly. I am still struggling with the update to Photos OS X, replacing iPhoto. But it's getting better all the time. :-)

  7. Just read of your fall - it takes awhile to heal trauma and bruise. I had to get a new hard drive on my Mac in January and then reload. Before the hard drive went, I spent hours and hours discarding, saving, and storing multiple places. It's nerve-wracking. We've become completely dependant on our computers! Feel better soon!

  8. It sounds that the learning curve will be steep with the new Mac. Steep learning curves do us good.

  9. I'm using Yosemite and have Microsoft Office installed. I had to buy Office, but I didn't want to bother learning the Apple version (Pages?) that came free with my laptop. I need Office because it is the standard word processing software for exchanging documents with the school districts that I occasionally contract with. Enjoy your new Mac. I love mine! ...and I hope you feel better soon.

  11. Good to hear that you are feeling better. It is nice that you know how to do all this computer updates and so forth. When my computer died and I had to buy a new one, I had to call my daughter to come and get all my stuff back on it for me – I guess with time I could have done it but she is so good that in just a few hours she had everything finished, but I do not have a Mac, although I have a new Mac iPad. I had never heard of Yosemite apart from being a national Park and mountain in California …

  12. Such bruises (Prellungen) as you most likely suffered from your fall are more painful than a neatly broken bone, as my sister can testify from her own experience; she was hit by a car when she was 9 years old, and her broken arm didn't hurt nearly as much as the bruises she had all over her body. I hope you'll feel less stiff and sore soon. Just don't give up on moving, don't start assuming a "Schon-Haltung" because that will only make matters worse. This advice from Dr. Meike was for free!

  13. Welcome back ! It often happens that the pain really arrives days later after a fall ! Gute Besserung !

  14. I also would suggest and also use the same as Andrew - Open Office solves all problems. You know Friko, bruises hurt much more, are sore longer and take longer to heal. Give yourself a bit of time and you will be good as new. Cheers and have a lovely day with your new IMac.

  15. So glad you are bad -- I miss those visits here (and you to me, too). But awfully sorry to hear that your aches and pains are getting worse, not better. I know it always seems like the second or third day is the worst and I hope that soon enough the inside aches and pains will subside and you'll be back to digging and walking Millie with as much verve as before!

Oh, the computer thing -- always so hard. Good luck getting all reinstalled and back in gear.

  16. Those tumbles can often take a while to recover from (speaking from experience). I hope you are on the upswing and will be back to your gardening soon. Nice to see you back online.

  17. Pain from those bruises can be helped by gardening...I find.

  18. That was some spill you took! We don't bounce back like we used to, either.
A new computer sounds overwhelming to me, but you will figure it out. We do what we have to do, right?
So glad to see you back, though!! :):)

  19. Glad you are getting better. If nothing is broken you are just mending fine. I dread getting a new laptop and will not change operating systems as I dread that more!

  20. I'm glad you are able to learn more about a new system, Friko. I know it's difficult because I self changed Windows to Linux. This one is similar to Android system that iMac uses, built by Apple Inc.

  21. I was just thinking of you recently and hoping a blogpost might pop up soon. Drat on the soreness and stiffness, and may it soon be gone. What a nuisance about Yosemite. "Rather cross" is diplomatic vis-a-vis Microsoft Office and MacWord. I don't look forward to my turn to "upgrade" (to use the term loosely).

  22. Since I've never heard of Time Machine (except for Dr. Who) or Yosemite (except for the National Park) I am lost by most of this post but glad to hear if you are getting sorted out, but sorry that you are still suffering from that nasty fall. Hope the stiffness wears off soon:)

  23. Hi Friko - good to see you here .. and yes technology is a law unto itself .. so I admire your commitment to the learning and setting up process. Good to know all is well .. I'm sure the stiffness will ease - the one thing about my hip .. was I surprised that if I got moving the pain went - though frankly I really had very little and have been exceptionally lucky in that regard.

So sincerely hope the manoevreability will suddenly appear and you'll be out in the garden in no time .. lovely to see the primroses - they are so pretty .. and to know Millie is forgiven .. cheers Hilary

  24. I can smell those primroses, loved them as a child always gathered a few for my momma.

As the survivor of a bad February fall I commiserate, poor old you.

I'm still recovering piece by tiny piece.

    Stay safe my dear.

  26. Lovely primroses in your photo. Glad to hear you are on the mend. Mending takes longer, I find, as I age. Sigh. Glad the new computer is working out.

  27. It all sounds very uncomfortable and you've probably run through the gamut of home cures for bruising and stiffness , by now . These things really only exist to distract us until we get better anyway .
Maybe it's time to resort to the 'really good pub lunch' remedy . Can be repeated as required .

  28. We don't pop back as quickly as when we were younger, it will take time and I hopefully you will be your former self soon. Good luck with your new fella, Mac.

  29. glad to hear you are healing albeit sorely. you know more than i do about apple. i switched to a mac and was really concerned about leaving microword word. i found pages to be easier and better, and somehow my documents transferred with no help from me.

welcome back to our beloved blogs :^)

    love

Glad you are getting back on line.

  31. Poor you Friko! Millie the tart to blame eh?! Get well soon dear lady!

  32. It takes time to recover from the shaking-up and bruising of a bad fall, so please be kind to yourself. it sounds like it will also take time to get your new imac up and running fully. All this technology is wonderful, but only when it works properly.

  33. Great news, welcome back! Get well soon, come completely to your usual self! The way you sound makes me think it won't take long. And do not miss April freshness while taming your IMac!)))

  34. Whatever you do, make sure you try to move your legs or they could get worse.

Congrats on getting a new iMac.

    Heal quickly.

  35. Oh, my! I come over here to catch up with you and find you've been to the wars. So glad to also find that you're better and that the computer issues are being resolved.

  36. Libreoffice.org is a more-than -acceptable open source substitute for MS Office. Way better than Pages. I used to love getting a new computer and setting it up - but now it's drudgery. Hang in there.
