Back at long last

but by no means sorted.

Everything was gone and I still haven't recovered much.
The Macdoctor wiped the hard drive and re-installed the ancient Snow Leopard which means that many apps can't 'read' contents added in more recent versions. I am working my way through apps but there's little hope that I can repair much. It'll have to be a new computer but I haven't decided yet whether it's to be a macbook or another iMac. The price of the things!

Apart from that, and on a lighter note, I am lucky to be alive. Millie did her best to kill me. Nearing the road home on a walk she suddenly saw one of her best friends, Kevin, who was out with Sam, his collie; the two of them were crossing the narrow entrance that closes off the dirt track into the main road.  There are thick metal bars across this gap, with a staggered opening, to stop kids running into the road.

Millie saw Kevin and rushed towards him. Millie loves men. The way she throws herself at her favourites is almost indecent. Terrified that she would run into the road I screamed at her. NO! She crouched on her belly, but only for a second. NO! More crouching. Believe me, when I bellow NO! the whole street hears me. Everybody around stops dead instantly. Not Millie. She slowed just enough for me to catch her by the collar but then she gave one almighty final tug to reach Kevin. As I was leaning over her I was off-balance already, so I went forward in an arc, my head hitting the metal bars, scraping knees and arms in the process. Kevin grabbed my arm, hard, which didn't help, Ralph from across the road came rushing over and a lady arrived from her garden gate. I was winded and hurt all over, so I simply sat there trying to catch my breath and whimpering a bit. That made Sam come and give me a slobbery kiss, while Millie, firmly held by Ralph, looked a picture of innocence; a little pained at having been deprived of greeting two of her favourite men in the manner to which she feels entitled but otherwise calmly wondering what all the fuss was about.

Eventually I allowed myself to be dragged upright by my kind rescuers and Ralph, still firmly holding Millie's lead, took me to the gate into our field. When I said "hold her close, don't let her get run over", Ralph said "why not, she deserves it." He was joking. He's another one Millie loves to distraction. Little tart.

I am still feeling very sore today, but upright and breathing.

  1. I've seen a couple of examples of people being hauled to their feet immediately after falling by people hoping to help. No, let people stay down for a bit and recover. It is funny, but not funny really, how grabbing for someone or something falling can make things so much worse. Anyway, pleased you popped up tonight. I had thought, I discovered Friko and now she has vanished. It is the way of the world of the blog, at times.

  2. Yep, Friko, tis time to push out the old and get yourself a macbook - you wouldn't believe how smooth and wonderful they are. I love the world of Apple - everything is so easy to use - I guess I just love my "i" products.......basically because they do not have hangups like the world of microsoft and everything is always updating, updating, updating, which takes more and more time on your pc - you want a smooth system....you go with apple.eh. Now Millie has just too many men in her life - she will become a wayward pooch if you let her continue to behave in such a manner. ha,ha Glad you wern't hurt too badly and you did a great job of re-telling the story - I could picture the whole thing happening. Now that you are upright and breathing today, get on with that purchase; don't let it wait any longer. Cheers to you and take care and hope you are not sore for long.

  3. Upright and breathing is a good position to be in after your nasty trip to the ground. I hope you heal quickly both physically and emotionally. Having fallen myself recently, I know how frightening that can be.

  4. Friko, luckily my little dog is small enough that I can hold on to her. But she occasionally does that jerk and run think that throws me off balance. So glad you didn't get hurt any worse and that no one got run over in the road!

  5. Oh my! It does sound as though you could have really been seriously injured and in the hospital. I know so many people for whom dogs are the danger. My sister's labs have brought her down numerous times. Hoping you are feeling better and the bruises are healing well.

  6. Oh, I would have done what you did and ended up in the same sorry state of hurt. You just protect them. And of course she had no idea what she did to you or how you felt. Well, I hope that picture of innocence is being sweet as pie to you. I always suppose it could be worse but it probably doesn't feel that way these days. Keep hanging in (and on, I suppose, but with both feet grounded!) And good luck with the computer issues -- I feel for you on that one, too.

  7. Wow, that must have been scary, but probably happened so fast you didn't have time to be scared. The older I get, the less agile I feel. Heights, especially, make me uncomfortable. I hope you are feeling better.

  8. Nasty shock to the system.....I hope you are feeling better by now.

  9. Glueck im Unglueck Friko! So glad nothing worse happened, I hope you are fine now and over the shock. Hitting your head on metal rods, oh dear, you were lucky after all. Wishing you good! :-)

  10. Accidents such as these can happen so quickly. I'm glad you are only sore and not more seriously injured. It's amazing how quickly we react and how little thought we give to our own safety when someone we love is in danger.
    Heal well, Friko.

  11. So glad you are not more severely injured. I remember being dragged on the ice by one of my dogs eons ago with me screaming to stop and a busy road nearby. She'd spotted a cat.

Their innocence after such mayhem has to be seen to be believed.

I hope both you and your device recover quickly :)

  12. My 3. attempt at posting, a short note: I highly recommend an iMac for your viewing and post-processing of photos. I got mine refurbished from Apple under warranty and have had no problems. It will sinc with your iPad too.

  13. Changed my cookie settings and now posting seems easy under another ID so I want to express my sympathy to you having had such a painful experience. Walking my pups this has always scared me although the older they have gotten, the less yanking, still enough to pull a shoulder. Traumed or Traumeel, the homeopathic remedies you probably are familiar with, can work wonders on bruises and Bach's Rescue Remedy for shock would be recommendable. Wishing you a speedy recovery and the perfect new tool and toy for your internet shenanigans. I do love your accounts of life as you see and experience it.

  14. You have had some misadventures but at least nothing was broken (apart from your computer I guess.) Dogs are lovely but strong – this is why I like cats – they are easier to handle. Sitting peacefully in your garden, if you get a sunny day, should put everything back into working order (apart from your computer…).

  15. I hope you recover quickly. I love my MacBook Air. I've had it two trouble free years now. It goes everywhere with me.

  16. Oh Friko .. how very unfortunate ... but I hope as the week goes by the pains will ease and the grazing will heal - at least it seems there's no bones broken ..

Then enjoy looking for the new replacement machine ... take care and let's hope that process goes smoothy and things can be recovered .. cheers Hilary

  17. So glad to see you back online! Really missed you. Last year I was outside with my little Yorkie. Made the mistake of saying a word he understood to mean "run". I started to run. He was faster. Right in front of me. I hit the concrete face first, no time to think of breaking my fall! A fairly sturdy pair of glasses saved my nose a bit. Ruined the glasses. Huge black eyes and scraped arm and knee. He knew something was wrong, but no idea what. So I hear you clearly! Again, I am glad you are back, and hopefully about over the fall. Can't talk about the Mac computer. Love my iPhone and iPad, but deal with Microsoft laptop.

  18. Sorry you lost everything on you mac. Macbook is likely more practical than iMac.
Sorry about you rather serious run into a hard object. Next time let the dog go for your own safety.
    Hope the recovery is speedy.

  19. I'm contemplating replacing my iMac and talked about it with my geek son. He says you get so much more for your money with a desktop than a laptop, only go with the Macbook if you really want a more portable machine. I've got two iPads, so it isn't an issue, nor is space and looking straight forward at a screen with a keyboard at hand level is more comfortable than bending over a laptop or having my hands raised to type. Ronan also said that desktop machines last longer, normally, than laptops. All the same, I'll go to the Apple Store and try them out and compare specs too.

When I had a dog that wasn't instantly obedient when told to stay, I kept him on a lead anywhere near a road. He still pulled me over once though, and then I got him a Halti. He wasn't thrilled, but he needed more training before I trusted him again. So sorry about your accident, what a horrid shock.

  20. Ouch. I am so glad you are ok. And that the loving tart is also (despite her efforts to kill you both).

  21. I'll bet you didn't know you had such skills of agility. I hope that you recover quickly without any side effects.

  22. You describe Millie so well, she jumps off the page.

  23. Take care
    I have had big dogs
and they are too much for me at this time of life.
Little Callie - almost too much
    as she jumps on me
    after I return from errands.
    So happy to see me
    she is :)

  24. I pitched head first into a tomato plant yesterday just by reaching out too far. Goodness knows what would happen if I had a dog to add to the mix. I'm glad you are recovering from your tumble. Wouldn't it be nice if our computers could heal themselves as quickly?

  25. Reminds me when I was learning how to ski ... every time I fell down, my dogs pounced on me thinking it's play time ... glad you are okay, Friko :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Aua! That sounds like an impressive stunt... with your head hitting those metal bars, it could really have been much, much worse. And it's not just the physical impact, a fall like that is also very much a shock on a psychological level, isn't it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You were lucky that you didn't break anything !

    ReplyDelete
  28. Other commenters were right. A little moment to consider always is good after a fall. It gives a person a chance to consider body parts, one at a time, and make sure everything is in working order. As for dogs contributing to chaos, a friend has a truly large Great Pyrenees who can tip her over simply with his affectionate leaning. If he wants attention, he goes after it.

I'm not one to offer advice on new computers. I'm still living life with a PC running Vista, and a flip phone. i can't synch any device with any other, which leaves me more time to try and keep my mind in synch. :-)

  29. Upright and breathing...what matters most. Very nice post. Love your description of the fall and neighborly help. Did you ever think we would find all this excitement at our age?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Makes me glad I have a big fat lazy cat. That sounds awful! Glad you are okay, at least. That could have been much worse.
You'll have to let us know what form of computer you decide upon. Such a big investment. It was difficult for this old brain to switch over from Windows to a MacBook, but after I got used to it--I do love my McLap. :)

  31. Oh gosh, you must have felt so shaken up, psychologically as well as physically: horrible for you. I hope you soon feel much recovered and am pleased if no lasting damage was done. Nice to see you back on-line:)

  32. I'm really sorry to hear this. I'm really glad you're fine.

    Greetings from London.

  33. High time for only excellent things to happen for you and yours. Very glad you are OK!

  34. Well Friko, it's a relief to read this post and to realize that in order to post it you must be feeling better after that scary adventure with Millie and her lads. I am so glad that you were not injured more seriously.

It's clear that your writing has not suffered!

On the computer front, you may remember that I went over to the MacBook side of the road a few years ago. I remain very happy with this decision. I could go on and on about this, but perhaps that might be more easily done via email.

  35. Quite a tumble. Glad to know you're okay!

    ReplyDelete
  36. yikes! years ago when I could still take a tumble without worrying about it too much when my youngest grandchild was still in her first year I was holding her and their boxer on a leash. boxer saw a cat and took off pulling me off my feet as I fell to the ground doing my best not to fall on the babe in my arms and keep her from hitting the ground. so I succeeded in that.

  37. Just catching up - sorry about the OS problems with your Mac. I've not had problems with Yosemite, but my Mac is newer.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I've been away and away from the computer. I've missed your posts and have spent a delightful half hour catching up with you. I love best the walks in your area. I'm sorry you've had such trouble with your computer and hope you're recovering from your Millie-spill.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh dear. I hope you really are alright and no troubles pop up from this incident later. I know you were concerned for Millie, but I have to say, if it was me, I would have let her run and hope there weren't any cars coming. I'd say Millie would have been well and truly across that road in two or three seconds anyway.
Hope your computer troubles end soon.

  40. So sorry to hear about your accident, and hope you are recovering well. And your computer accident, oh dear this sounds so frustrating. You have saved me from downloading Yosemite. I won't even think about it.

  41. This reminds me of being pulled along an ice-covered street by a hare-chasing 120-lb Alaskan Malamute. The only way to stop was to aim for the bonnet of a parked car. It worked, and at least I didn't hit my head like you. You must be one tough cookie to have gotten up from that one...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh my goodness. That is a story with an ending that sounds like it is all going to be ok, but I see you wrote it six days ago, so I'm not sure. How are YOU? I hope you are ok. It sounds as if Millie may need a good girl leash until she learns her manners. I threaten Boston with his good boy leash all the time, and at times I use it so he gets the message. (It is a sort of harness that makes him stay by my side until he remembers and does the commands. I'm not much of a dog trainer, and my husband lets him get away with anything, so at times our walks are times when he remembers I'm the bad cop.)

I hope you get your computer all sorted out soon. They are such investments. I just got a new, very powerful MacBook Pro. I do love it. My old one was still ok in my opinion, but it was old and slow. My hubby insisted on a new one. (His job at Apple helped.) I am not one for desk top computers. The screen is too big. I like my little lap top.

  43. Ouch! That sounds like a nasty fall and I'm glad there was no lasting injury. I can remember being very slow to get up after the fall that broke my wrist last year and was glad i weas on my own and could take my time.
I can't advise about Apple products as I've always been a Windows person and am very happy with my 17" Asus laptop.
