The woman just won't learn

Can't ever leave well alone.

The Mac was working beautifully, a bit creaky and aged, maybe a bit slow; but it worked, and it and I had come to a satisfactory coexistence.

No , mess it all up, why don't you, cause a rift by installing the new OS, namely Yosemite. And thus causing the poor old Mac to throw up it's keys and not only go on a go-slow but refuse to entertain usage of my dearest and most used apps.it's all over between us, divorce lawyers have been notified and if mediation doesn't work, a new partner has to be found.

Oh dear me, I never thought that's how it would end with us. An honourable retirement of a much loved friend would have been much more the thing. But this?

Will you ever forgive me, old friend?

  1. You have my sympathy. I too have an older operating system that I've been advised to update. The idea of change and adjusting to new tools is not appealing. Your post is a warning that I should make the break on my own terms and not await the inevitable:(

  2. Sigh. Too many life parallels for this aging, creaky slow mover in this post. Sometimes I need an new operating system, but suspect that bits of me would go on strike immediately.

  3. I can never be sentimental over a computer. Cars, yes. Mobile phones, a little at times, but not a computer. The wisest advice I think I ever offered anyone who is not so experienced with technology is, If it ain't broke, it don't need no fixing. I just wish I took my own advice at times.

  4. Divorce! Sometimes that's the best solution, especially when you can't mend what's causing the pain and chaos. If mediation can work, a few dollars given to make the hearts beat as one again, it will be good too. But, with lawyers coming soon, it seems as though you have made up your mind to part. I can't say don't cry.
(Nicely written post). A smile on my face.

  5. Have encountered complaints about Yosemite OS on macs over a certain age --5+years. Suspect its all part of a plan to keep us buying new pooters. The humor of your blog gives me confidence in your resilience. All my best wishes.

  6. Technology is wonderful when its means remain invisible and we can simply enjoy its "ends." It's come to pass that when I see the word "upgrade," I come close to breaking out in hives. Sending multiple good thoughts . . .

  7. No never. Well, on rethinking, of course you will be forgiven. The Yosemite OS is not for ever computer. I had an old macbook pro myself. I loved it dearly. It had been my companion through much. My husband insisted it was too slow. He bought me a new computer. I erased everything off the old one and sent it to my dear daughter. I know she'll never love it like I did.

  8. Oh boy, I went through the same some years ago.
And when I think about it, my "new" one is getting
    old, too... And what then...?
Hope you get a nice new one that's easy to handle :)
    Have a wonderful Sunday!

  9. Your post brings up the recurring nightmare of my husband upgrading his computer only for the thing to behave in a demented fashion...denying access to sites, 'playing up'...you name it...and then the battle to keep him off my faithful laptop while his gets sorted before he wrecks that too....

  10. Hahaha!!! No mac here but an old Toshiba that one family member describes as "the brick". Heavy, overheats, is duck taped in more th as n one corner and has a broken cursor key. But I love it.

  11. Okay, I get it. Your computer croaked. I'm at about the same situation. If my computer slows anymore it will stop.

  13. I don't have a Mac, but I do have an iPad. After I downloaded the newest IOS in November, nothing was ever the same. They then released a patch for all of us with an older generation tablet. It helped a little, and I mean "a little". Thankfully, my children all contributed to a Christmas present of the newest version of iPad for me. Nothing lasts forever, and technology only lasts a year or so. As Geo said, they want to keep you coming back and buying new.

  14. I have a Mac too, and luckily was warned by two different people not to upgrade to Yosemite as it has problems. Evidently when a new operating system comes out, it takes a while for the bugs to be removed. I was told that after March (that's in 2 days time) it might be better. But I'm not going to upgrade until a geek gives me the go-ahead. Your post is a warning. So sorry it happened to you.

  15. well I have to wonder who left who? The Mac abandoned you for no good reason and I like so much that's not how you see it :-)

  17. Maybe the kind of experience you are making there with your Mac is part of the reason why I am still hanging on to my old iPhone - the 1st generation one which can't be upgraded anymore, nearly 6 years old (which is ancient for a smartphone).

  18. Hi Friko - yes ... I don't trust myself ... so live on - I'd like a mac - but I sort of cope with the ipad, and I use this thing called a pc .. typing is easy, putting things on or opening up a can of worms makes for stress.

Hope the mediation goes well - or perhaps not - a newbie while your strong to deal with all the new funky bits and bobs?! Good luck - Hilary

  19. I also had to divorce from a PC last year, but I don't regret it the new one is much better !

  20. I divorce mine all the time - newer is better - you simply must finalize your break, mediation just won't work at this stage and that new "mac" you are looking at will truly amaze you. lol

  21. I love my old computer, with its old and much-maligned operating system. I love it's cheerful little clunky noises, and the way the screen goes black every now and then, as if to take a rest. I love everything about it, and wouldn't dare say otherwise, lest it notice, become irritated, and set out to teach me a lesson.

Some relationships need careful nurturing, and I think I'm in one. :-)

  22. I know exactly what you mean. Every time I put a new OS on my Mac it is a different beast. But I guess it's time for a new one. I'm thinking of buying myself one that has the latest bells and whistles. I wish they made it easy to uninstall something that just doesn't work right. I don't think you can, unfortunately. Sigh.

  23. Commiserations! I'm not an Apple person. I stick with Toshiba -- I've had three of them while you probably only needed one Mac!

  24. I hate technology. One would think it would have evolved to user-friendly after all these decades!!

  25. Oh no!! I have been too afraid to update to that new system...apparently for good reason. I think I'll pass and stick with slow, occasional freezing up, and all the rest. I remind myself that back when I had dial up I had a deck of cards next my desktop so I could pass the time playing solitaire while pages loaded. ;)

  26. The wonderful thing about a messy break-up is that it makes the New Love all that more appealing and satisfying when it arrives. This could be making room in your life for a welcome upgrade.

  27. Well, if one dog year equals seven human years, then one computer year is the equivalent of about twenty human years. Is anyone working on improving the longevity of our computers?!?

  28. I just hate it when technology pukes. Messes up your whole day. Yesterday we were at a restaurant and they said that our dinner (which, by the way, was burgers -- nothing fancy) would take an extra half hour because the computer broke down. We spent a good deal of our dining conversation pondering how the computer going down made the cooking slower. Couldn't they just write the order and read the order and cook it just the same?

Good luck. I get more angst than anyone when I have computer issues. Or at least I am in with the pack!

  30. The barn door is still open. Someone with a reasonable computer skill set should be able to get you back to Mavericks. Instructions here: http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/revert-back-mavericks-from-yosemite-3581872/
Updates of operating systems, whether for computers or smart phones, should always be approached with great caution. There are ways of safekeeping your old system all while downloading the new one for a trial, and if it doesn't work out, you haven't lost your peace of mind. I read about Yosemite a while back and decided not to go for it - too much negative press. Sorry for your frustration!

  31. No Macs here either and I'm very fortunate to have a computer-savvy husband who takes care of most computer stuff for me. I shudder at the thought of having to deal with it all by myself.

  32. Sorry you have been hard hit by this latest OS. Apple has not yet released the final version. What you got is their beta version and I have learned years ago that beta usually means trouble. I am waiting because this one is a big chage to put macs at same level as tablets but no touch screen. Right there I see an issue.
I think I'll but a new laptop when all is worked out because they are redoing the entire photo thing and I imagine that will mess up stuff. It alredy has on the ipad and iPhone. The phone handles the new stuff fine. It's a newer one. The iPad is third generation and has not responed well. In March it stopped syncing over wifi.It makes noe sense since it worked up to that time. And the only answer Apple support gives is the photo program is still in beta version, ARGHHHH
