Changeover

We’re all decided,
the year has become
so last year, dear,
it simply has to go.
We are nothing if not
up-to-the minute, and
we plainly can’t be seen in
last year’s thoughts.

Lists of best and worst,
funniest or most deplorable,
you cannot get away from them.
Editorials on the ins and outs
of futile wars,
natural disasters,
the whys and wherefores of
catastrophes and
galloping epidemics,
there’s no let-up.
Tales of
greed and corruption
make headlines throughout the year.

But we have plans,
we will make
changes.
Yes sir,
we have learned our lesson.
We must do better.
We will do better.

We have Tabula Rasa.
A fresh start,
renewed hope.
Let the journey begin.

Tonight pretty pink clouds trundled across the sky at Valley’s End.
I wonder, could they have been pigs flying?

A Very Happy New Year
To
One And All.

  13. Friko, it's still just about supper time here in New York, but you and yours are much closer to turning over that calendar page.

The flying pink piggy clouds might be a variation on the poem that promised Sailor's delight. May your New Year get off to a beautiful start, and continue on that note.

  14. Friko, my burst of laughter at the last sentence had my husband lift his head from his reading and ask, "what?" Looking forward to more succinct commentary of yours in 2015.

  23. The pigs don't seem to have made it over here quite yet, but I'm sure they will: later, if not sooner. What a delightful first post to read this New Year's Day, Friko. Clearly, your spirit is starting to soar again. I'll take your flights of fancy over those pigs any day! Here's to a happy and creative 2015.

  28. Yes indeed - they could have been. Pigs will fly one day, I'm sure. In the meantime I'll just keep moving forward, one foot in front of the other, steady as I go. As the tortois said 'I may be slow, but I'm sure'.

  30. Or as the French say, "Quand les poules auront des dents." We may never see hens teeth or pigs fly but I hope to come here and find many more such delightful posts.

  35. How very odd that, just before I came to read this, I noticed that the sunset has broken through the clouds just enough to show some piggy-pink reflection!
Wouldn't it be nice if all our (and others') sins and wrongheadedness could be wiped out and a new start from zero begun? Maybe not. Maybe the collective stupidity builds character somehow.

  36. Ah well, starting anew over and over is at least a start.

  38. Hi, Friko, just stopped by to wish you and your family the best for 2015. Even though worries, hardships, or disappointments from the last year both in the public and private haven’t faded away, the hope is often high at the New Year. It’s not bad to always start a new year from winter anticipating the warmth of spring. I look forward to what the new calendar will be filled with.
