We All Love Our Dogs!

From This England, selections from the New
Statesman column 1934-1968:
Benno
A dog usually possesses those fine qualities in which human
beings are sometimes deficient. If your dog were
suddenly to know you as you are, and not as he thinks you are, could
you look him in the face?

The Hon, Mrs. Joan Barran is one of the famous Ruthven twins
and a daughter of Lord Ruthven.  Her Dachshund, Snoutie, follows the prevailing fashion of single pearl earrings and choker collar, and manages to look most attractive in them.

In character the Irish terrier is what may be defined as a 'perfect
gentleman’ and moreover one is thoroughly aware of his status. For instance, the one I owned would always differentiate between guests, in whom he displayed a courteous interest, and the servants, whom he treated with polite indifference.

A special corner by dogs for dogs will be included in “Calling All dogs”, which the BBC are putting on next Sunday .......
The view in Broadcasting House is that, although dogs do not normally display much interest in the loudspeaker, they will if special material is broadcast for them.

  1. I suspect that dogs often do know us as we are. And accept us - warts and all.

  2. Now I'd love to see that hound sporting pearl earrings along with her choker collar. I love dogs and have never known a bad one, although I hear they exist. :-)

  4. I think my dogs know me better than anyone else does, yet they are so forgiving that they keep me on as their servant.

    Love,

  5. Mine would love 'Calling All Dogs'....tips on better ways to hide that fish you stole from the keep net than under the sofa cushions...
Pity that I won't understand a bark or growl of it.,...

  6. We always had Labrador Retrievers growing up. One was black...Sally. She could flip a biscuit from her nose into her mouth.

  8. It is my belief that Molly does know me as I am and loves me despite that knowledge. That is why I can look her in the face and smile.

  9. And here is a difference between dogs and cats: while dogs display a courteous interest in guests and treats servants with polite indifference, cats are egalitarian. That is, their polite indifference extends to all . . .

  10. I 'feel' for dogs that get a bad 'press'. In most cases, the paw should be pointing straight at the owner.

  11. I think Dogs know us as we are, but basically if they are loved and cared for, they just accept our behaviour whatever it may be. A Dog falls in love with a family or individual person and a bond is created. The Dog will hang onto that bond, as well as the person. I find my own Jack totally committed to me, although she easily shares with others. I am the voice she listens to when she is being naughty. I look deep into her eyes and simply say NO and its kinda like-------"Ooops Mommy has spoken" the law has been laid down. I really enjoyed this post Friko - truly, I did :)

  14. Dogs are special even if we know we're only fooling ourselves into believing their humanness. Anxious to know how BBC experiment turns out. Hard to imagine a dog paying attention to a box for very long. I have a recording that includes seal sounds. When I first played it the dog's ears perked up, but only that one time.

  15. A new book says we are more closely related to dogs than many thought. Try reading, Citizen Canine by David Grimm.

  21. Love my little rescue dog
    Callie.
    Sometimes I wonder
    what would I do without
    her constant companionship?

  22. I'm primarily a cat person but I'd be lost without our little Benny.

  23. The indignities we visit on dogs - a pearl collar and studs. Really.
I couldn't be without a canine companion. Rory, a cairn, watches TV. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it myself, every evening.

OMG, Friko ... this is so precious ... the pic is just like looking into Piwo's face RIP ... bless your heart ... he always knew about my migraines starting at least a day ahead ... as he would be at my side at all times ... tight ... so tight that I would almost stumble and trip over him ...
