Whoooooo

that was scary!

Just at the mirk and midnight hour
The Fair Folk will ride
They that would their true love win
At Miles Cross they must bide.

The Ballad of Tam Lin

Last night was the best night of the year to divine the identity of your future husband or wife. If you missed it this year, here’s what you do next Halloween:

Take a candle and go alone to a mirror in a darkened room; eat an apple while looking into it, combing your hair all the while, and the face of your lover - or of the Devil - will appear over your shoulder.

Do try and remember, I won’t remind you again.

  3. Certainly a test of co ordination...eating an apple with one hand, combing the locks with the other....and at the appearance of the demon lover I'd probably set fire to my hair with the candle....

  4. Friko, I am making a note...must remember to put that note in a safe place, so I won't forget to add it to my 2014 calendar...when I eventually buy one.

Do you know anyone who has used this technique?

    xo

  5. I would hope it might end up being my current lover, who has been married to me for s few decades. :-)

  6. Oooh. Now THAT is scary! But sounds fun. Alas... I'll have to wait a year -- hope I remember!

  7. We are enjoying wedding anniversary number 44 today, so I'd best not check the mirror. And as you can imagine, anyone who's been married 44 years isn't a big fan of mirrors anyway.

  8. Looking at my reflection frightens me. Having said that a picture with a candle could be worse. I'll work on it for next year.

  11. Oh, that "mirror" technique is something I first read about in my all-time favorite series of children's books: the Betsey, Tacy, Tib series by Maude Hart Lovelace. You've taken me back.

At the risk of being obnoxious, I wanted to direct you to a post I’ve put up on a not-the-usual blog. Here’s the link, and the password is 28notes.

  12. The worst scenario would be when young girl looks in the mirror and they're one one and the same.

  17. That was so funny! It looks as if they are selling pre-carved pumpkins, is that right?

  23. If I am still around after this first one goes...I think I will be quite happy to live on my own. Training another husband would be just too much work!

  24. I'll keep the spouse I have, but thanks anyway. I'd probably just get hair on my apple.

  25. Ha ha, never heard that one before. Have a good weekend Diane

  26. Don't think I would care to do that... but thanks for the info all the same. ; )

  27. Molly said it first. :-) In my case it would probably be DH telling me to uit that candle out and get to bed.

  28. You'd have to be a contortionist to eat an apple, comb your hair and hold a candle. I would probably set myself on fire. Dianne

  32. This is definitely a topic that's close to me so I'm happy that you wrote about it. I'm also happy that you did the subject some justice. Not only do you know a great deal about it, you know how to present in a way that people will want to read more. I'm so happy to know someone like you exists on the web.

  34. Some of my lovers have turned out to be devils, but I'm not sure I want to see them appearing mysteriously over my shoulder.
