Unthinkable! I might have missed this day

if it hadn’t been for Millie.
It was Millie who made me come out for a walk in Radnor Wood and I can’t thank her enough.

The view back from the beginning of the walk.

Half a mile further on we had the first glimpse of the village of Clunton
nestling in its hollow.

The fields surrounding Clunton
from another half a mile further up the hill.

I should have taken heed of the sign right at the entrance into the wood.
“Danger” it said, and “Forestry Work"

But I didn’t, and this is what we found a couple of miles into the walk,
after a good climb. At first I followed Millie onwards
- she is that black speck towards the top left hand corner of the picture -
but when my walking shoes threatened to come off my feet in the clay,
I whistled for her, and we turned back down the hill.

Not that we regretted any of it,
and the final view before we set off for home
almost made my heart burst with pleasure and gratitude.

  1. I know the feeling well of being full of gratitude and pleasure for being able to experience and enjoy nature at its finest. I blogged about something similar too.
Fresh air, trees, sky, a canine, human or alien companion and somehow, suddenly, all can seem right with the world. Benno would be proud!

  2. Oh, Friko, that last view is stunning! That's exactly how I feel about Buddy. He gets me out there, and doesn't let me miss one single beautiful day. They seem to know what we need more than we do. And isn't that wonderful?

  9. Frico, wonderful photos, I see weather was fine, your mood was fine too. Millie was glad to walk with you so long distance. I love the first photo: thin straight trees and colorful hills behind them.

  10. Dear Friko, this reminds me of that line of poetry: "My heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky." So often, my heart leaps up before the glory of nature and the deep goodness of humans. I'm so pleased, glad really, that Millie is now a part of your family. Peace.

  13. Cold or not, your neighbourhood is gasp worthy. Good girl Millie! It's amazing that she's already running off leash and returning to you when called. It took us a long time to trust Georgia off leash. The first time I took her out, she bolted and gave me the fright of my life. Actually, she did that even a couple of years later, in front of a group of people who asked me (running and screaming after her) if it was a dog I was looking after for someone else. Gutter dog :)

  22. My wife actuaLLy missed a weekend today. She thought that she had another weekend before Thanksgiving in order to have the children over for dinner before they go to Colorado, but she miss counted her number of week ends. So I think ths means that I cleaned the house (my portion) for no reason now. Sad. I could have read more!

  34. Hooray!
Apart from the very beautiful views, looks just like my walks have been lately, that just leaves the incedibly muddy logging paths then.

  35. Hello:
You are right - such wonderful countryside. Indeed the whole of the Welsh March is a joy and we know this particular part very well having friends in Clunton.

We will be 'off air' in a watery Venice for a while. We will look forward to catching up on our return.

  37. Wonderful sights, Friko. And, you know, some people still ask me, "How on earth do you survive out here in the 'sticks?' There's nothing here."

  39. If I had your beautiful views...I would never come inside. What a beautiful place to live. I know we have beauty surrounding us too...but we get used to it. We see it everyday. It always looks greener on the other side I guess. Can't wait to see winter scenes from you.

  46. Funny thing is that if you didn't tell me where you were, I would think you were in the US on the East Coast. Even the little village in the hollow looks familiar. Dianne

  48. Thanks Friko, I do enjoy starting my day with one of your walks. Nothing more inspiring for me today than a short trudge to the shop under dense grey clouds.

  50. So picturesque. I am really happy to have learned that you got once again a canine companion, congratulations. Yesterday I switched my browser from Firefox back to Safari and today it occurred to me to check on your blog - and voila, the comment box reappeared! I have been reading all along, but from now on it seems I will be able to respond again.
