and where's the bacon?
Call this breakfast?

  1. Bacon is essential. But beans? I have never heard of beans with breakfast. What kind of beans? Baked brown beans sound good actually. But yes, always bacon.

  2. Hysterical! I just left a comment on another Magpie alerting the writer 'UK beans' were missing from the menu! One of my favorite breakfasts in jolly old England!

  4. I don't think I'd like beans with breakfast, but I've never tried them. Not fond of bacon, either, although bacon'n'eggs are very common in North America.
However, I really enjoyed all the butter, Nutella, cream, and fresh bread on our travels in France, The Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland.

  5. I was thinking about the missing hash browns and bacon (always a must with eggs)... for this being a feast and all, not just coffee on the run.

  6. oh you def need a pork product....

  7. Gotta have me some pig....and...hash browns a must. You are correct...the photo is incomplete. Vb

  8. How 'bout vegan sausage?

    No?

    OK, no.

  9. Spicy pork sausage, or fried
    or grilled honey ham,
    or thick slabs of bacon
    more meat than fat,
    and sure beans, a terrific
    companion to eggs;
    but for me the thrust
of the magpie had to do
    with analogy and symbol,
    with spring breaking hot;
    like the wonderful posts
    you have already given us.

  10. It's lovely having an occasional "English breakfast": egg, bacon, sausages, baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast - sets you up for the day!

  11. My husband's and my first argument after we married: I'd made sausages, bacon, eggs, and chips (it was dinner time) and I'm about to serve it and he yells "Where's the beans?" I had no clue what he was talking about and he insists we can't eat all that without beans and next he's grabbing his car keys. I'm thinking he's leaving me over stupid beans and I scream "Where are you going?" and he looks at me as though I'm daft and says "To get beans"

  12. I think you have it all now, bacon, beans, fried bread, sausages, cold ham, mushrooms, fried tomatoes, and eggs. Maybe a little cold chicken on the side?

  13. I am so happy that you said this
I was thinking the same thing

  14. Hi Friko! This was floating somewhere around in my subconscious--but now that you mention it, it pops! I almost used the expression "bacon and eggs" in my vignette, but ooops! "eggs and toast," then. The beans are new to me though. Too cute! xxox

  15. As an American, I'd never heard of baked beans for breakfast, until I met my wife. She's English and had to describe (in animated detail) what an English breakfast was! So based on my new found knowledge, I'll have to agree with Helen, Brian Miller & Vivien.

  16. I used to love eggs and baked beans (and ketchup!) for lunch or dinner but having grown up Jewish, bacon was a no-no... "was" being the operative word.

  17. Beans? That's a new one on me...yet another reason to visit across the pond one of these days!
And I would be looking for a glass of orange juice too.

  18. Oh, the joy of our first English breakfast! My kids were surprised and pleased to find beans on their plates along with the eggs and toast. Makes me think I should treat them to this in the morning.

  19. Bacon sounds good - I've never had beans with eggs and toast. I love the words in this!

  21. I'm afraid it also needs tomato, mushrooms and blood pudding to be authentic ... and Worcestershire sauce and a mug of strong tea - if you're serving, can I join you?

  22. Bacon and egg without baked beans is an assault on tradition - as unthinkable as toast without marmite or bratwurst without mustard. Black sausage, though optional, is also a must-have in my book. And where's the brown sauce?

  23. I agree, Friko, no beans? a tragedy.

  24. That's the lo-cal option in Glasgow . It definitely must have black pudding , Scottish sausage , bacon and potato scones , as well .

  25. I did pass up on the bacon yesterday and had two eggs with toast. I did need more fat even though I love bacon.

  26. Bacon makes everything better. Didn't know about the beans, but it sounds good.

  27. Beans??? Bacon, hashbrowns, or, if you're a Southerner, grits (I'll pass on those).

  28. I'm happy to settle for the two eggs :)

  31. Awww---you took the easy way out---but I agree, if it were about breakfast, bacon is a must have. Beans - not so much:-)I did love the English Breakfast when we visited a few years ago.

  32. Beans are off. 'ow about some nice spam?

  33. Knock knock!
    Who's there?
    Egbert!
    Egbert who?
    Egbert no bacon!
Sorry Friko (couldn't resist it) :0)

  34. Beans! Beans! Always omit them as they make me, well, you know! Agree about the bacon though!

  35. I live in the land of rice and beans, smothered with cheese and topped with hot salsa. Preferably green chiles buried somewhere in the whole mess. The real Southwesterners consider this normal and feasibel day and night. For me I can not but think of the tragedy of commercial eggs gained from chickens unable to roam, much less move or turn in their cages. Bacon may contain Nitrites able to wreak havoc with our brains. So I will stay content with my oatmeal (no milk or sugar needed, thanks.)

  36. ehrlich gesagt, das englische Frühstück... gruselig! Verzeih bitte :-)!

    Dir einen ganz schönen Tag!

  37. Friko:
    To Anna....soak your beans.

As long as we're getting picky, the eggs should be runny, marmalade on toast, black coffee.

  38. Its almost mealtime here, so I had to stop reading the tasty comments, and say that I like breakfast anytime of the day. My daughter brings me eggs from her farm and the yolks are as dark as yours. You need a meat of some kind to go with the eggs I think. Dianne

  39. Beans at breakfast is new to me.
But I bet grits is something you never see!

  40. Beans, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, couple of slices of black pudding . . . keep it coming, Friko!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yup baked beans and they'd better be Heinz! But given a choice I'd have fresh mushrooms sauted in butter instead of beans any time. Poached eggs and mushrooms = sighs.....
