'And the Days are not Full Enough'

And the days are not full enough
And the nights are not full enough
And life slips by like a field mouse
Not shaking the grass.

Ezra Pound

E.D.
 a dear friend,
21 January 1917 - 18 December 2009

'Time to go',
you said.

Song

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
and if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

  1. A beautiful quotation, one of my favourites, the words of which we should take heed and a beautiful poem for your friend who has passed.

  2. Your friend had a long life and I believe that she must have been blessed through your friendship. The quotation and poem are beautiful and I'll share both with my husband. Each of us was at a funeral on Friday - he for a 23 year old friend of the family, and I for a 73 year old neighbour. It was a hard day and we were both acutely aware of time and the need to consistently voice our appreciation to the ones we love and to give words of encouragement to the young ones coming behind us.

  4. Maybe the 'grass won't be shaken' but surely the world will be turning, around and around, still bound to be rememered in love, which does negate every distance.

  5. I think God blesses folks when it is their time to go. When heaven appears in the near future who can possibly want to hang on to the wear and tear of this world. May she rest in peace. I am sure she has earned it. So sorry for your loss.

  6. Friko, I'm so sorry for your sadness. I'm quite sure your friendship with her was important to both of you. It's what makes the grass quiver.

  8. I'm listening to a Bach cello suite as I read this.

    The poets say it so well.

    Have a warm and peaceful holiday, Friko.

  19. My condolences. It is a tough time of year. We are helping a Meals on Wheels client with his dog. He has landed in hospital. Very tragic. He is not a well man, with little support, addicted to beer & cigs. He is on an IV for blood and liquids. So sad.
