Sunday Quotation

P.G.Wodehouse

The Adventures of Sally

Chumps always make the best husbands.
When you marry, Sally, grab a chump.
Tap his forehead first, and if it rings solid, don't hesitate.
All the unhappy marriages come from the husbands having brains.
What good are brains to a man?
They only unsettle him.

  1. Hey ole girl, I like that. I am proud to be called ole girl. I am familiar with that expression in Europe. I watch PBS TV and get some of the British shows. I just love Dame Judi Dench and I don't know what the name of the show is. I have read a lot of English novels also. I once belong to a poetry group, had almost forgotten about it. We met in a lovely little vintage shop in the middle of nowhere back in my old County hometown.

  2. Now there's a viewpoint to bring on debate! Thank heavens for a man with brains - and the courage to link himself to a woman with the same.

  3. Provocative! It may have its advantages at times, but I usually fall for the brains before the brawn. I am too impatient to tolerate a chump or stupidity. Maybe within the inbred, royal lines there was not much choice! :)

  4. I’ll take a brainy guy against a moron any time. Well now a very sweet moron might be better than a narcissist and loud brainy fellow though. Middle of the road could be better to live with.

  5. I've got to say mine has brains too but I'm lucky enough to have one who would move mountains to make life easier for me. He is a treasure.

  6. Interesting point of view...that only the creator of Bertie Wooster could make. Wodehouse was a humorist and I find it refreshing and rather gentlemanly that he gives women credit for intelligence.

  7. Love it! I am such a Wodehouse fan - just listened to an audio version of one of the Wooster/Jeeves books for the umpteenth time. Still makes me laugh! What a fun way to start my day... Hugs, Silke

  8. Queenmothermamaw - Nice to learn more about you, keep it up. I too love Judi Dench and never miss any of her shows. I have also seen her several times in the theatre where she usually plays serious roles.

Pondside - very glad you think so, yeah!! Couldn't be doing with a chump myself.

Bonnie - You too, eh? Good, I totally agree.

Vagabonde - no, definitely not, even a sweet moron would be too much!

Wipso - treasure and brains! Can say the same for mine; lucky us.

Celeste Maia - I think Wodehouse was not speaking for himself but rather in character. He knew women have brains.

Silke - Wodehouse fan? me too, but always taken with a pinch of salt.
